Before our trip, I looked at the India Highlights and Suggested Itineraries sections in India (Lonely Planet Country Guide) and the color photos in DK India to get an idea of what I wanted to see. For our trip, I brought both guidebooks with me.

Since Lonely Planet India didn’t contain many photos, DK India was helpful when I wanted to see a visual of the sight or if I wanted to learn about a sight in more detail. Major sights have 3D layouts with color photos explaining certain features. Smaller sights have just color photos or just text. (i.e.) For the Taj Mahal section, the 3D layout and images pointed out and provided more information about the decorative elements of the Taj like the beautiful carved floral design and calligraphic panels. In Lonely Planet India, it only contains a text description and a map.

For hotels and restaurants, I used Lonely Planet India because it contains a map to show you where the hotels and restaurants are in relation to sights. In DK India, there is a small section in the back but I didn’t find it as useful it doesn’t contain a map.

For logistics, I used Lonely Planet India. DK India doesn’t include detailed information about how to get there.

Having only been to Idaho three times (once for 10 minutes!) I can say that this book will undoubtedly help me plan my next much longer excursion to the great state of Idaho. The chapters cover sections of the state with details on various cities, what to do, where to eat, etc., all of which will be helpful. As with any book on this subject, some items may be out of date even as the book is printed, but I trust that the author’s references to restaurants and lodging are dependable. Having looked at other books on Idaho, this one not only covers the hidden gems, I think it covers all the unhidden gems this state has to offer. Though I already admitted I’m no expert on Idaho, I found this book to be comprehensive enough for someone planning a two-week trip to explore this corner of the US.

As a frequent visitor to the area I was pleasantly surprised by this very practical and compact guidebook to Naples and the Amalfi Coast. I am pleased that this is a book that I would take with me on my next trip – there is enough here that is new for me, and I’m surprised that the recommendations are, based on my tastes and personal experiences, quite accurate.

I am particularly pleased that the author gives good coverage to the Capodimonte Museum (I had really expected to criticize the book for overlooking one of Naples most important attractions), which for some reason is usually given short shrift in American guidebooks. On the other hand, the allegiance to a “top ten” format can be a little misleading unless the reader is careful: the Capodimonte is listed as a “top ten” museum along with such extremely minor destinations as the “paper” museum in Amalfi (Museo della Carta), but note however that the Capodimonte museum is itself a “top ten” attraction for the entire region.

It’s also interesting that the book does not devote much space to such well-known destinations (and typical tourist overnight stays) as Sorrento and Amalfi itself. Quite frankly, I think it’s a wise decision: the book is small enough to fit comfortably in a jacket pocket or a purse or a knapsack, and I think it’s primarily meant for the traveler who is staying in Naples (perhaps for business) and is interested in what to see in the city and on day trips along the coast, as far south as Paestum.

One minor nit: although the author mentions that nativity scene decorations (”Presepe”) are typical souvenirs of Naples he does not mention the street “Via San Gregorio Armeno” which is lined with shops selling them. I personally consider it a highlight destination of the city. Similarly, although he mentions Vietri sul Mare, there’s no photo of the town and he doesn’t really convey how much fun it is to explore the ceramic shops there. Of course a book this size can’t really do more than list the attractions: a careful reader who knows what they are interested in will find much useful information here. Highly recommended.

In January I crisscrossed Cambodia for four weeks. The two guides I took were Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. Both are worthy guides. This guide was at its best when it came to Siem Reap/Angkor Watt. Its coverage of Angkor Watt and the multitude of other temples is excellent.

Both guides will give you a great orientation of Cambodia. They will point you to the best sights to see, but Rough Guide gives you a better understanding of the history, religion and culture of this country.

It has good maps, reliable recommendations of what to see and do, a good history/religion section and a very good ‘recommended books’ section.

Cumbersome, with all Rough Guides, is the price code@ system for accommodations, ie. 1=less than , 2=-, 3=-, etc. You need to memorize the amounts or flip back to codes. Lonely Planet is easier to use; it tells you what it cost in dollars – Duh, what an idea!

Overall, if you are going to explore this little known, astonishing and wonderfully mysterious country, you will do well with this guide. I recommended watching two excellent DVDs before you go (Pol Pot -1997 & The Killing Fields 1984) and also taking The Gods Drink Whiskey@ by Stephen Asthma, excellent. Happy Trails, you will love Cambodia. Strongly recommended.

There are two strong books on Portugal – my opinion – and the two books are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which I personally prefer or Lonely Planet Portugal. These two books both around 500 pages and are both tremendous efforts, very well balanced with photos, maps, history, etc. and both are clearly 5 star guides.

I would both (and DK Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet) head and shoulders ahead of Frommers, or Rough Guide or similar books that are less well balanced. Overall, the DK guide has better photos and visuals and makes for a better souvenir so it gets the nod as the better book.

Portugal is an old country with lots of fun things to see and do. I prefer to Algarve region but also enjoy visiting Lisbon – which can be expensive. Also I like to go well armed with maps and books because unlike the USA or Canada some areas have no English signs so the more information the better.

This book is well balanced and like the DK guide is that it pulls a lot of things together such as history and culture, food, towns and lots on Lisbon. The book brings it all to life with just magnificent photos and maps.

Either case this is an excellent buy. 5 stars.
